You never know when a doorway will appear.

Recently I was enjoying the drive to Lonestar Lake for a little mom’s day kayak adventure. Driving along as my teenager selected the tunes, I was letting my soul unfurl and happily anticipating floating on the water under just a little drizzle of rain. Do you ever feel like the universe is playing with you a little bit? Because it happened to me that day.

For many years now I've facilitated a leadership development cohort that consists of a fair amount of time spent developing self-awareness of personal strengths & values while also anticipating potential future roles that would most benefit from those qualities. One of the takeaways I share with each cohort is the idea that as your path unfolds, and the more you are aware of your own strengths and areas of greatest contribution, the more you will be able to evaluate each potential future doorway of opportunity that appears along the way. That way you’ll know whether you want to walk on by, or just peek through the doorway, or actually step all the way through and embrace what’s on the other side.

Recently I have been doing some soul-searching of my own while experiencing a career transition and transformation, and while driving to the lake that day we were not quite half-way there when I looked to my right and saw a literal actual door on the side of the road. It was propped up on its edge against a tree, horizontal rather than vertical. At that moment I experienced a feeling that was a combination of Alice in Wonderland, Neo in The Matrix, and me in my own real-life metaphorical story with a real-life door staring me right in the face.

I smiled and thanked the universe for playing with me…for real, you never know when a door will appear! Good job, universe. Well-played. With this blog post (my first!), I am walking through that door and creating my future.

I hope to hear from you soon so we can Create The Future you are looking for!
